Olney Free Methodist Church came into existence in 1913 after several camp
meetings were held in the City Park. The young congregation met in homes until they could build
a small building at the corner of South Mill and East Chestnut. After two years there, an old
Baptist church was purchased at 217 West Cherry for $900.00. It had been used as a hay barn
and was in sad condition. It was repaired and remodeled so that it served for several years as
the worship and educational facility. When a new sanctuary was built, it was remodeled into a
parsonage. The new brick church building was constructed in 1942 under the pastoral leadership
of Paul N. Ellis. In 1964, under the pastoral leadership of W. E. Roddy, a new sanctuary was
erected adjoining the older building, which then became a fellowship hall and educational
facility. In the following years, the church grew and in 1992 under the pastoral leadership
of Burl J. Shinkle, construction began on the expansion of the sanctuary and new educational
facility. On October 17, 1993 a service to dedicate the newly remodeled sanctuary, new classrooms,
and offices was led by Bishop David Foster
